Mikhail Maiofis was born in St. Petersburg Russia and was an accomplished artist at a very young age. He is best known for his illustrations of children's books, most notably the famous Adventures of Baron Von Munchausen. His work is in both private and public collections throughout the world, and he is listed as one of the top 100 Russian artists of the century.
Mikhail and his family moved to the United States in 1989,
fearing the fall of the Soviet Union. His life and art
changed dramatically at this time. Being in a different
country, with various views about art, was challenging
and slightly paralyzing at one point. His butterflies are
a representation of his previous life in Russia, and a
struggle to find his artistic wings here in America. Many
of his most recent pieces are being shown here for the
first time. |
