As a Regional Winner in the 2003 annual Arts for the Parks competition and his acceptance in both the Top 100 and atop 200 in the 2004 event, Frank's reputation as a nationally recognized watercolor artist continues to grow. He is a Signature Artist of Watercolor West and the recipient of many awards.
A self-taught artist, Frank began his drawing in pencil
as a child, a practice he continues today. As a teenager,
he attended the Denver Art College where he received introductory
instruction in various media. A graduate of the U.S. Naval
Academy, decorated for his career pilot service in the
Korean War, Frank worked for 30 years in the rocket and
power industries. Upon retirement in 1989, his serious
study of transparent watercolor began under the guidance
of noted watercolor artist, Joe Garcia.
His extraordinary use of light and attention to detail
immediately identify his paintings. Frank's palette includes
no more than a dozen pigments and often only six. Excluding
opaque pigment, he uses only transparent watercolor to
recreate the beauty of the mountains, lakes and streams
he loves.
Frank and his wife make their home in Rancho Santa Fe,
vacationing each year in Ketchum, Idaho, where painting
becomes secondary to fly-fishing. |
